John was drafted into the Army Air Corp. one year after Pearl Harbor. He went directly to Miami Beach for basic training and a year later was shipped off to the South Pacific where he had seen lots of action. During that time, John preferred to listen mostly to Jimmie Lunceford records.
It was at this time when John’s mom found a two pound cookie tin and placed 22 pounds of Glenn Miller records in it (27 RECORDS), and shipped them off to the South Pacific. John’s mom had also included a loaf of Italian bread hollowed out with a bottle of red wine in it! But when the package arrived, there was a problem. He had no record player and the bottle of wine was broken.
Fortunately, he was able to find a Captain who lent him a record player. Thanks to this Captain, the unscathed Miller records played on and on throughout the duration of the entire war. It was through this series of events that transformed John into the Miller fan that he is today.
John later enjoyed a very successful career as a building contractor for many years, and is now retired and living on Long Island. He enjoys his kids, grandkids, great grandkids and never misses the program.
